A keypad made for a Linear multi-code receiver will not talk to a newer Megacode board, and vice versa. The part may look right on the pole, but the board behind it speaks a different language. We verify by the label on the control board, not the keypad face. OEM Linear parts carry a sticker with the model number on the back of the housing. Quality aftermarket units exist, but for Linear specifically we lean OEM when the opener is still original; the aftermarket keypad housings sometimes fit loosely in the existing mounting plate. • Code works only after several presses. The carbon contacts under the key membrane wear unevenly, so “8” reads every time but “3” needs a firm thumb and a small prayer. The board is usually fine; the keypad face has worn out.
• Keypad works dry but not after rain. Water has gotten past the housing seal and is shorting the membrane contacts. This is the most common failure we see on older Linear AK-11s mounted on unshaded Southlake columns.
• Intercom buzzes but no voice comes through. The speaker in the street station has failed, or the microphone at the house unit is gone. Either way, the wiring usually tests fine and the part itself is the issue.
• One code works, the other stopped. Linear keypads store codes per slot. When a single slot fails but others work, the keypad’s memory chip is failing, not your opener. Replacing the keypad fixes it; re-programming the opener does not.
• The keypad stays lit or flickers. A stuck key is keeping the unit awake and draining the circuit. Sometimes it is just a dead button membrane; other times the board is shorted and the keypad needs full replacement.
