• The gate scrapes the driveway on the swing arc. A roller that has flattened on one side or a hinge pin that has worn into an oval lets the leaf drop a quarter inch or more. That quarter inch is the difference between clearing the concrete and dragging across it, and the scrape mark on the driveway is the tell.
• The gate groans or creaks through the middle of its travel. Dry, worn metal on metal. By the time you hear it, the grease has been gone for a while and the bearing surface is scoring. Re-greasing quiets it for a week, then the sound returns, because the wear is already there.
• The gate hesitates or pulses on startup. A bound hinge makes the FAAC operator work harder on the first movement. The motor’s torque sensing reads the extra friction as an obstacle, so the gate stumbles before it gets moving. Owners often mistake this for a dying motor when the hinge is the actual culprit.
• The gate leaf sags visibly at the free end. Stand back and sight down the top rail. If the far end droops, the hinge side has worn enough to shift the gate’s entire geometry. On a 14-foot gate, an eighth inch of wear at the hinge shows up as an inch of sag at the free end.
• The roller is flat-spotted or no longer spins by hand. With the gate in the open position and the operator disengaged, the roller should turn freely. If it doesn’t, the bearing is seized and the roller is now a skid, not a wheel. It grinds flat quickly after that.
