AfterBFT Access Control Installation: The Southlake Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible access control components across Southlake, and a typical keypad, receiver, or control-board replacement here runs $285 to $640 installed. Most BFT access control work is a same-day job when we have the part on the truck, which we usually do. Where things get slower is when a Southlake homeowner has a BFT panel that died quietly months ago and only notices when a keypad stops talking to the opener entirely. The call usually starts the same way: “The gate works fine with the remote, but the keypad does nothing.” That’s an access control failure, not an opener failure, and it needs its own diagnosis.

Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT access control spans a few distinct lines, and the part has to match the generation of your board. Older BFT systems around Southlake, particularly the Rigel and Deimos series, use a 26-bit Wiegand keypad input. Newer BFT models like the Phobos and Lux series moved to 24VDC accessory feeds, and plugging an older keypad into a newer board without checking the voltage will fry the keypad in about a week. That’s a compatibility gotcha we see on a regular basis.
To identify your BFT access control setup, look at the control board inside the opener housing. The model is printed on a label there, and it matters more than the opener brand badge on the arm. If the label is faded or gone, we can pull the board revision from the wiring harness. When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, BFT’s proprietary keypads are well made, but the aftermarket Wiegand-compatible keypads we carry work just as well on most series and cost about $75 less installed. Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing
Here are the symptoms Southlake homeowners call us about most, and what each one usually means:
- Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is sending a signal, but the board isn’t relaying it to the motor. That’s usually a failed relay on the BFT board or a broken wire between the keypad and the panel.
- Code works sometimes, not others. Intermittent operation on BFT keypads is often corrosion on the keypad’s ribbon connector or a board that’s overheating in the afternoon Southlake sun. It’ll work at 7 a.m. and die by 3 p.m.
- Gate opens on its own at random times. A failing BFT access control board can send phantom open signals. That’s a security issue, and it’s worth a same-day visit.
- New keypad won’t program. If a replacement keypad won’t take a code, it’s typically a voltage mismatch or an incorrect Wiegand data line connection. This is the most common result of a DIY attempt on a BFT board.
- Keypad lights up but buttons feel dead. The keypad membrane itself has failed. BFT keypads exposed to direct Texas sun for five-plus years often get brittle membranes. The fix is a new keypad, not a new board.

DIY or Call Us?
You can check two things safely: first, confirm the keypad is getting power, and second, try the code on the spare keypad if you have one. If those check out, the problem is almost certainly in the board or the wiring, not the keypad itself. That’s where DIY goes wrong on BFT systems. The board carries live 120V and low-voltage 24V circuits side by side, and one wrong probe with a multimeter can short the board or hurt you. We’ve been called to enough Southlake driveways where a homeowner tried a board swap and ended up with a gate that only opened halfway. Expect five to eight years in direct Texas sun and weather. Keypads mounted on the north side of a column or shaded by a tree usually last longer. If yours is over seven years old and acting up, replacement usually beats repair.
Keypad membranes are not serviceable. If the buttons feel dead or cracked, it’s a replacement. If the wiring between the keypad and the board is the problem, that can be repaired. We’ll tell you which one you have before quoting anything.
